The elementary school focuses on the personal and collective growth of students by taking inspiration from schools of fish. Schools of fish exhibit social interaction, cooperation among individuals, leadership, and decision making. These are all qualities that are necessary for elementary school aged children to develop and learn. The elementary school is designed to cater to the development of these qualities.
Schools of fish must successfully establish paths of travel and interaction among each other and with their surrounding environment in order to function well. The elementary school will focus on creating simple and efficient paths of travel within the space. Interaction between program areas, floors, students, and faculty are considered.
Boulder, Colorado is a community that places great importance on nature and health. The elementary school is an opportunity to demonstrate how a built environment can be designed to consider the health of the environment and the building users. The Living Building Challenge has been applied to the interior of this elementary school to ensure that the material and energy usage, as well as the health and happiness of the occupants is premeditated and integrated into the design.
