The Los Angeles Basin is a coastal lowland area in which the city of Los Angeles is located. The basin was created during tectonic plate movement that has occurred over thousands of years. Throughout time, sediment was pushed up the sides of the basin, resulting in a shape similar to a series of smaller bowls, stacked inside of each other. Several ranges of mountains and hills, such as the Santa Monica Mountains and the San Joaquin Hills, surround the basin. Several fault lines separating the tectonic plates pass through the basin.
The office is designed in vertical and horizontal layers. The reception area is the center of the office and all other spaces radiate outward from that central point. The fault lines in the Los Angeles Basin are used as inspiration for paths of travel between areas of work, creation, meeting, relaxation, and reception.
Various ceiling elements reflect the landscape of the mountain ranges and rolling hills that surround the basin.
Furniture and finishes reflect the organic formation of the Los Angeles Basin. Natural materials and a monochromatic orange color palate are derived from the color of the San Joaquin soil that is prevalent in the area.
For architects, interior designers, and other professionals who create built environments; the design process is conducted in several steps ranging from schematic design to construction administration. A successful design is a result of the layering of all these processes together to create one unified project.
